And they're off...

The 2006 Winter Olympics opened in Tornio, Italy tonight. The opening ceremonies stressed the need for world peace (like they always do, along with the deeply sentimental pleas that the athletes refrain from doping), but this particular year they turned to John Lennon's song Imagine in order to get their message across.

Now don't get me wrong - that' s a great song. It's just that NBC, the IOC, and the Italian government basically just simulcast in HDTV to the entire world that the Western/European vision of world peace requires that we have no possessions, no countries, nothing to defend, and (this one will go over especially well) no religion. The performance of the song by Peter Gabriel was preceded by a 'peace poem' written and recited by none other than Yoko Ono. Glad to know Yoko still loves us.

At least the speed-skaters with fuel tanks on their backs and fire streaming from the tops of their heads were cool.
